EN125 accident near Algarve Shopping leaves cyclist dead at the scene

bicycleaccidentA cyclist was hit and killed by an out-of-control vehicle on the notorious EN125 near Algarve shopping in Guia yesterday morning, October 31st.

The 43-year-old local man was declared dead at the scene and police are piecing together why the Honda CRV swerved across the road and struck the cyclist head on, throwing him several metres through the air.

The INEM ambulance service responded but nothing could be done and the victim was declared dead at the crash site.

Another accident occurred in Tavira at lunchtime yesterday when a 78-year-old man was hit by a car while crossing the road. He was transported to Faro hospital with serious chest, leg and abdominal injuries. The local police are investigating this accident as well.

Portugal has more than five thousand pedestrian accidents per year accounting for 25% of those who died in road accidents in 2015.

The main cause of such accidents in Portugal is speeding but the percentage of drunk drivers involved in accidents with pedestrians is reducing.
