The average driver of a new leased car in Portugal spends between €477 and €525 per month over the first three years, according to the 2016 LeasePlan CarCost Index, with drivers in Norway and the Netherlands paying more.
Portugal is in the middle of the table of 24 European countries, with the overall cost of €477 per month for diesel cars and €525 for vehicles that run on petrol.
Norway is the most expensive country to drive a petrol car at €708 per month, while the Netherlands is the most expensive for diesel vehicles at €695 per month. In contrast, Hungarian drivers spend just €364 on petrol vehicles and €369 on diesel ones.
The index shows that devaluation cost is the biggest factor at 37% of total, followed by the Imposto Único de Circulação and VAT at 20%. Fuel contributes 16% to the total running cost of a car per month.
The analysis indicated that in six of the 24 European countries surveyed, driving a diesel car is more expensive than driving a gasoline car due to higher taxes, insurance and maintenance charges.
Switzerland has the highest insurance rates in Europe, with these costs totaling an average of €117 per month, with the Czech Republic emerging as the country with the cheapest insurance for petrol vehicles at €37 and Sweden as the country with the lowest insurance costs for diesel vehicle at €39.
Based on an annual mileage of 20,000 kilometers, the average monthly fuel expenditure in Europe is €100 for gasoline and €67 for diesel.
In Italy, drivers you €136 per month for gasoline vehicles because of the high fuel tax with Russians paying €54 per month because of the country's large oil reserves. The cheapest country for diesel is Poland at €49 per month.
The LeasePlan CarCost Index 2016 analysed the cost of car ownership for petrol and diesel cars in the company's multi-brand fleet in 24 European countries.
The index compared the most important costs, such as purchase price, depreciation costs, repairs and maintenance, insurance, taxes and fuel costs, including winter tires, if required by law.
The analysis is based on the first three years of operating costs and an annual mileage of 20,000 kilometers.
