A large fire caused local concern as it lit up the evening sky on the eastern edge of Faro this evening.
The blaze started just before 6pm in the canes along the Ria Seco in front of the Quinta da Senhora Menina wedding venue and was visible as far away as Olhão.
The Bombeiros commander said the fire was soon controlled and extinguished and had not been a threat to nearby warehousing and properties.
The Faro fire-fighters were first on the scene, followed by crews from nearby Olhão and from Tavira.
The countryside across the Algarve is still tinder dry with only a few brief periods of rain in past weeks. Fires are still a risk, especially from those burning winter garden waste and farmers insisting on clearing land by setting light to scrub and the remains of harvested crops.
