The unwelcome presence of pigeon lice, or 'mites,' in the coronary unit of Faro Hospital caused its temporary closure on Saturday, while a specialist team went in to deal with the infestation of the 1mm beasties.
The regional hospital management said that it "recognised the existence of mites" and had moved patients to another area of the hospital so they could continue to be cared for.
"During the daily cleaning on Saturday, the presence of pigeon mites was detected in the coronary unit, so it was decided to close the unit and proceed immediately to a disinfestation and cleaning process," read the statement.
