Petrol and diesel prices in Portugal steadily have been rising and now are at their highest since 2014, causing complaint from the transport sector and tension in many households.
GlobalPetrolPrices.com has data on fuel prices in several countries and has ranked them, highest first.
Portugal is in 10th place in the world and eighth in Europe, for the most expensive fuel at an average cost of €1.58 per litre.
Iceland is not a good place to fill up as fuel averages €1.81 per litre.
Greece, Italy, Hong Kong and Israel also have higher prices than Portugal but for those conveniently near the border, Spain’s average price is €1.32 per litre.
Venezuela and Iran are at the bottom of the list, with €0.01 and €0.24 per litre, respectively.

In Portugal, the ISP tax on petroleum products yielded an average of €9 million per day throughout the first quarter of 2018 after an extraordnary tax increase of 6 cents, made in 2016. The price of oil recently has shot up to the highest levels since 2014.
More than half the cost of fuel in Portugal is made up of duties and taxes with the ISP tax the largest culprit - a litre of diesel at €1.35 actually costs, before taxes are added, just 62 cents and a litre of petrol 95 at €1.56 per litre would cost 61 cents.
