Parachuting MP, Steve Baker, shrugs off close shave at Penina

ParachuteMPSmallFormer Brexit minister and sports enthusiast, Steve Baker, said his main parachute failed to open during a skydive above the Alvor aerodrome near Portimão.

The Conservative MP for Wycombe, who resigned from the Department for Exiting the European Union in July, ended up in a dangerous spiral as he descended.

Baker’s left steering toggle had jammed - “After two attempts to release the toggle, I took the reserve,” said the unfazed MP, who said the parachute jump had been, “awesome.”

An emergency landing next to the Penina Golf course clubhouse left the MP shaken but not stirred and able to post pictures on Instagram on Sunday, showing him smiling and holding up the life-saving reserve parachute while sporting a studded leather watch strap.

“Pleased my reserve parachute ... worked as advertised after a main malfunction last week,” wrote Baker, “Emergency landing on nearby golf course perfect, next to clubhouse. Wished you were there etc.”

A keen athlete, regulars to YouTube will be familiar with other of Baker's Alpha male adventures.
