Driver dies in EN125 crash

INEM125A van burst into flames after it was involved in a crash with a lorry near Portimão Hospital on the notorious EN125.

The driver of the van possibly died on impact but was inside the vehicle as it burned. The lorry driver escaped serious harm and later was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

The accident happened just before 3pm on Friday afternoon with GNR, INEM and local fire services rushing to the burning van with the victim still inside.

The heavy holiday traffic was blocked in both directions. After the fire was extinguished, local Bombeiros teams started to clear the road as they waited permission to remove the driver’s charred remains.

To August 21st, 25 people had died this year on the Algarve's roads, an increase of 5 fatalities compared to the same period of 2017, according to the National Road Safety Authority.
