The first Algarve fire this year happened in the Serra de Monchique today, consuming only around 2 hectares of grass, scrubland and eucalyptus near Tojal.
Firefighters were soon on the scene and there was no real threat to nearby houses as the crew extinguished the flames, according to Rui André, the dynamic mayor of Monchique.
According to information from the National Authority for Civil Protection's website, the municipality of Monchique is the only area in the country to be on maximum fire alert.
Despite today’s overcast and cool conditions, with rain in some parts of the region, the risk of fire is ever present.
