GNR command in Faro announced today that an illegal scrap business has been shut down in Foupana, Moncarapacho which was operating on land attached to the house of an elderly man, who now has been issued with a fine of €20,000.
The area was sealed off on Monday by the environmental protection police from Faro who fined the 85-year old owner for not having a license for waste management.
The GNR were interested in the illegal activities being carried out such as the storage and processing of precious metals, and the buying of stolen material such as aluminum that was identified as having been pinched in Tavira.
