The Judiciary Police has confirmed that it located and detained one of the UK's most wanted criminals here in the Algarve, for crimes dating back to 2018.
In compliance with an international arrest warrant, issued by the judicial authorities of the United Kingdom, 27 year old Callum Halpin from Manchester is suspected of committing the crimes of murder and attempted murder.
The case dates back to 2018 and follows the death of Luke Graham, aged 31 who was shot dead on a street in Ashton Under Lyne, Greater Manchester.
At the same time and place, another man, Anton Verigotta, was shot and suffered a serious gunshot wound, but survived the attack.
Halpin was allegedly one of three men who drove to the attack site and took part in the murder.
Present at the Court of Appeal of Évora, he was given the coercive measure of preventive detention, while awaiting extradition back to the UK.
Detective Inspector Lee Barrow, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “News of Callum Halpin’s arrest is an important development in our investigation and we will work closely with the NCA and other relevant international agencies to bring him back to Greater Manchester and continue our pursuit of justice for Luke's family.
This is the second of the UK's most wanted men to be arrested in Portugal within just a few days, with 29-year-old Alex Male of Weston-Super-Mare in Somerset being detained at Lisbon Airport on Saturday after arriving on a flight from Turkey, using a fraudulent passport. He is alleged to have been a distributor of class A drugs across the south west of England.
