The heat wave that is hitting the UK this week caused damage to the runway at Luton airport yesterday. Some flights were delayed by more than four hours, and some airlines were forced to divert flights.
Low cost airlines such as Ryanair, EasyJet, Wizz Air and TUI all fly from and to Luton airport. According to FlightRadar24, at least 14 flights were diverted to Gatwick and Stansted airports.
Flights were suspended from15:00, becoming operational again after just after 18:00.
On Twitter, the airport administration explained that the “high temperatures” were responsible for “surface damage” on the runway. “Engineers were immediately called to the site and repair work is currently in progress so that operation can be resumed as soon as possible”, they clarified while apologizing for the inconvenience caused.
British Air Force planes were also forced to use airfields as the runway of the main air base, in Brize Norton, “melted”,
Thermometers reached 37ºC this Monday in some regions of England, with predicted temperatures exceeding 38 over the next few days.
The UK is on red notice due to the extreme heat that is forecast for the next few days. In London, the maximum temperature record is expected to be broken in the coming days.
