The emergency phone line in Portugal, 112, is being upgraded to detect the exact origin of calls, but this function will only come in to play in 2023.
It is already possible to georeference calls from a landline, but currently when someone calls 112 from a mobile phone, the system detects the location of the nearest telecom antenna (which may be miles away). However, as of 2023, the phone exchanges operated by PSP agents will receive the exact geographic location of the area from which the call was made.
This new feature will be essential in situations where the person calling the emergency service does not know the exact location where they are, or when they are nervous, confused or in a state of shock.
This new 112 system and maintenance of it until the end of 2027 will cost 11.5 million euros.
