The mayor of Tavira, the socialist party’s Jorge Botelho, was today elected to chair the Intermunicipal Community Algarve (AMAL), succeeding the former mayor of Faro Macario Correia.
The socialist party now dominates the Algarve’s councils after success in the municipal elections of September 29th.
The PSD party's yes man has neatly been removed from the presidency leaving the socialists with an opportunity to make some changes. Maybe now there will be some pressure put on the government over various of the Algarve many problems that have not been dealt with under Correia’s party line leadership.
Correia’s now legendary U-turn over tolls set the tone for his presidency and he continued in the same vein over issues arising from government policy that deeply affected the Algarve.
With an empowered socialist in post there is hope at last that the Algarve region will gain a voice and be able to take action where action is needed to promote and protect jobs and businesses in the Algarve region.
