The number of those unemployed and registered at the Employment Institute of the Algarve has dropped below 20,000 for the first time in three years.
The end of August total unemployed figure was 19,851 with a small majority being male (53.3%), and predominantly between 35 and 54 years (48.5%).
The figures for the year-to-date show that to the end of August 2014 there were 12% fewer people registered as unemployed in the Algarve than last year with 5,262 finding employment.
The number of Algarve vacancies registered with the employment service was 7,839 between January and August which is 29% up on last year.
The highest number of registered unemployed was in the regional capital Faro with 3,223, while sleepy Alcoutim had 66 people registered as 'between jobs.'
Temporary seasonal workers will start to re-register as unemployed in September and October as tourists numbers ease off and businesses reduce their head counts proportionally.
