Monarch staff agree swingeing salary cuts

monarchMonarch airline reports that its staff have voted overwhelmingly in favour of pay cuts of up to 30%.

Its chief executive, Andrew Swaffield, said the vote was "a step forward" in the company's re-organisation.

The British Airline Pilots’ Association said pilots had made "major sacrifices to secure the future of this important British company".

Monarch is involved in a root and branch overhaul and is also seeking investors.   It said it is in talks with investors Greybull Capital to see if they will become majority shareholders in Monarch.

"It is now time for the government to engage with all of the parties concerned and do everything it can to make this deal happen and help Monarch survive and thrive," the chief exec said.

Even with investment, the company is likely to shed some 900 jobs, which account for about 30% of its workforce.

Monarch is seeking to drop its charter business and convert to a budget carrier in Europe to take on its rivals Ryanair and easyJet.
