Tavira was one of 32 municipalities in Portugal that reached the standard required to receive an ECO XXI award handed out by the Blue Flag Association of Europe.
Tavira exceeded the goals set in 2013 and won a flag, a medal and a diploma of good practice for its work towards sustainability at a local level, particularly relating to environmental quality, eco-awareness and education.
To apply for the ECO XXI awards a municipality must provide information on 21 indicators about the actions, activities and sustainability policies implemented over the past year.
The applications are evaluated by juries with members selected from 30 institutions and an ECO XXI flag is awarded to all municipalities where their overall scores are over 50%.
Tavira scored 61.7% this year and no doubt will fly its new flag with pride.
