Building work still trailing off in Portugal

buildingsiteConstruction work was knocked further back, reporting a drop of 0.8% in the eurozone in December compared to the previous month.

Compared to December 2013, there was worse news for the building trade as output was down by 3.5%.

There were, however, ripples during the 12 months, which meant that construction work increased by 2% for the year 2014.

The figure includes both building works and civil engineering. In general, building construction had a continued downturn while civil engineering projects were on the increase.

For once, Portugal did not appear in the list of those suffering the greatest decrease in production.

Its 4% annual decline was a bitter result, and below the average of 3.5%. But Portugal trailed behind the falls in France, Italy and Germany.

Nevertheless, for every month from July through December 2014, construction work was far less than it had been in those months in 2013.

Far from a healthy picture.

Neighbouring Spain, on the other hand, saw dramatic increases in each month in that same period.
