The GNR today announced the arrest in Quarteira of a man suspected of a car-jacking on Thursday in Faro.
According to the GNR, the 36-year old was arrested just hours after allegedly having stolen a vehicle by car-jacking, using a firearm to take over the vehicle.
According to police, when the man was arrested, with his partner and a child, a firearm was found in the vehicle, which they presume is the same firearm used to threaten the owner of the vehicle in order to steal his car.
The GNR added that the man has a criminal record for theft, drug dealing and attempted murder, and was on parole having been released from prison.
The arrested man is also suspected of filling up and driving off from a service station in early October in Beja.
The last car-jacking report from Faro was in January 2012 when a woman was threatened with a gun at the Forum Algarve shopping centre as a man tried to steal her vehicle.
The plucky woman, 43, started to shout, attracting the attention of two male passers by who managed to overpower the man and keep him restrained until the police arrived. The weapon was seized and proved to be a replica.
