Golf - Portugal Masters to stay in the Algarve

oceanicovilamouragolfThe president of the Algarve Tourism Region welcomed the announcement that the Portugal Masters golf competition will continue to be played at the Oceânico Victoria course in Vilamoura for another three years.

The Masters is the biggest golf tournament held in Portugal, with a prize fund of €2 million and which attracts over 2,000 hours of television coverage around the world.

Vale da Telha hit by tornado

tornadovilamouraPortugal’s weather service, and hundreds of locals, have confirmed that the Vale da Telha area of Aljezur was hit by a tornado in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 16 September.

The tornado hit at 05.20 and damaged a hotel, houses, trees and vehicles.

Ex-minister gets three and a half years suspended sentence

justiceAn unrepentant Maria de Lurdes Rodrigues said she it will appeal her suspended 3 year sentence, "I have a clear conscience and I am very proud of the work I did."

The former Minister of Education received the sentence, annoyingly for many it was a suspended one, for ‘dereliction of duty by a holder of political office.’

Portugal's €1 billion bond issue oversubscribed

eurozonePortugal's 'Agency for the Management of Treasury and Public Debt' (IGCP) this morning managed successfully to place €250 million in three month government bonds and €750 million in one year government bonds with demand in the market for three times the amount placed.

The IGCP also managed to attract low average interest rates illustrating that there is an appetite for Portugal’s bonds and at sensible interest rates.

'1,000 additional tax inspectors' have yet to start

nuncioThe Government said today that the deployment of a thousand new tax inspectors working for the Tax and Customs Authority (AT) "is coming soon" and it certainly will not be delayed until a new government tales over.

"The start date entry of a thousand new tax inspectors is expected shortly and it will be this Government that takes this initiative, it will not be the next government," the Secretary of State for Fiscal Affairs, Paul Nuncio (pictured) informed parliament during a report he was giving about combating fraud and tax evasion - 2013.

Bento leaves Novo Banco with reputation intact

bentoBES2Portugal's Finance Minister and the Governor of the Bank of Portugal both have been summoned to parliament at the request of the Left Bloc to explain the circumstances of the resignation of Vítor Bento and his management team, from Novo Banco.

"It has been alleged that there were disagreements between the management charged with restructuring Novo Banco and the Bank of Portugal’s policy objectives for a quick sale of the institution. Faced with this situation which has ensured BES still is in turbulence, and taking into account that Novo Banco is owned by the Resolution Fund which is funded with public money, more explanations are needed, as well as clarification of the goals of the government and the Bank of Portugal regarding Novo Banco" read the Left Bloc’s submission.

Silves golf course proposal pays little heed to the environment

golfThe project to construct a golf course on farmland to the west of Silves has been severely criticised by Quercus, the environmental group which fears the further destruction of the Algarve’s natural heritage.

The public consultation phase has ended and Quercus has let the developer and Silves council know of its objections.
