Pulp mill boss will pull investment unless 'eucalyptus monoculture' complaints cease

Paulo Fernandes gave this warning directly to the prime minister while signing contracts worth €125 million to expand the Celbi and Celtejo bleached eucalyptus pulp mills.

 

New sticker now mandatory for all vehicles in Paris

The requirement took effect on 16 January and includes foreign registered cars, according to the Paris City Hall.

Passos Coelho champions toll reductions for the Algarve

10759Portugal's former prime minister, Pedro Passos Coelho, was in the Algarve over the weekend in a vain attempt to position himself as the region’s champion over the Via do Infante tolls situation.

Tolls were introduced by the Passos Coelho coalition government amid howls of complaint from the Algarve’s road users who rightly pointed out that the motorway had largely been built using EU funds and was constructed to improve the region’s economy by speeding the journey time between east and west.

Arctic air to hit Portugal on Wednesday

bluemoonTemperatures will fall between four and nine degrees Celsius from Wednesday in mainland Portugal, due to a cold, dry mass of Arctic air.

According to the ever-cheerful Maria João Frada, a meteorologist at the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), Monday and Tuesday will be cold and cloudy in central and northern parts of the country and clear in the south but on Wednesday until at least Friday or Saturday it will get seriously cold, for Portugal anyway.

Portugal needs a food council to halt obesity and malnutrition

5224The new UN representative for Food and Agriculture in Portugal, Francisco Sarmento, considers the creation of a food safety council as a priority in the fight against obesity and to get farmers back into the fields.

 

The Portuguese Government has already indicated in informal talks with Sarmento that it will give priority to the idea, but would go no further than that at this stage.
