Germany and France enter new sharing deal for military

eiffeltowerFrance and Germany have taken another step in forging stronger ties and abandoning old rivalries by agreeing to share military facilities.

The two countries have signed an agreement to share C-130J Super Hercules military transport aircraft, as announced by French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on Tuesday in Paris.

MP praises the Algarve's many animal welfare groups

donkeyPortugal's sole MP representing the party for People, Animals and Nature (PAN), André Silva, said today that the new laws that have given protection to domestic 'companion' animals should be extended to other animals in order to curb their abuse.

"It is a crime to let a dog starve, but it's not a crime to let a horse starve. It is a crime to beat a cat but it is not a crime to attack a cow," said MP André Silva at the Kennel of St. Francis of Assisi in Loulé.

Faro's 'green space' improvements mask threat of major development

faro2Faro council has signed external contracts to restore, maintain and preserve the regional capital's parks and gardens after years of underinvestment.

The municipality is spending €67,699 with local contractors to ensure that the city's green spaces are renewed and "brought back to how they should be presented," according the the mayor.

Fuel oil spill in the Port of Sines - skippers being questioned by police

oilgungeThe Port of Sines management has reported that a fuel oil leak has polluted the harbour and that the area has been closed to shipping. 

Maritime police are investigating the origin of the tons of fuel oil whose leakage caused the closure of the container terminal harbour while clean-up operations were set in motion.

Spain will try to reach a deal for the UK to pay for the medical needs of some 800,000 Brits believed to be living in Spain, according to the country’s foreign minister.

What is plain to see is that all work remains on hold, as it was at the beginning of May, even though the significant upgrade should have restarted on September 1st.

Sites, such as the bridge over the Arade bridge near Portimão, (pictured below) remain 'as were' with scaffolding in place on one of the towers but with no work going on.

Former President Cavaco Silva in property rates 'error' row

cavaco4The former President of the Republic of Portugal, Cavaco Silva, was born and raised in the Algarve and in 1997, bought a plot of land on which to build a house.

The plot already has planning permission based on a project submitted to the council in 1994 but, being a man of some wealth, Cavaco Silva built a house of almost double the original project size in Aldeia da Coelha, Albufeira.
