Walking Football for the over 50s is gaining more and more interest among Algarve Residents.
After the Olhanese Strollers competitive game against the Cove Rapidly Ageing Pensioners from Farnborough (Hamsphire) in the first ever International Walking Football Competition held 21 February, the Strollers went to Browns for an open sessions to show the “vilamoura crowd” what it's all about.
Newcomers were surprised at how fast-paced the game was, with the players moving swiftly while always keeping one foot on the ground to avoid sprinting, jogging or running which would result in a free-kick being rewarded to the other team.
Walking Football was launched in Olhão by Chris Wright about five months ago and has since them caught the attention of Alan Brown, owner of Browns Health Club & Spa, that has now become the second venue in the Algarve to have Walking Football. With many health benefits and minimal stress on the body, the sport is a great game for the “forever young football players who want to continue playing the game without killing themselves!” says Alan Brown.
Free weekly walking football sessions will be held on the 3G astroturf pitch at Browns in Vilamoura on Tuesdays at 9:30am throughout March.
