English football team Sheffield Wednesday, simply known as Wednesday, travelled to Portugal for pre-season training at the Amendoeira Sports Club which is based at Oceânico’s Amendoeira Golf Resort in the central Algarve. Their five night training camp ran between 18th and 23rd July 2015. This training camp and friendly matches were arranged by Gary Hobson (FIFA and UEAFA match agent).
Portuguese trainer Carlos Carvalhal was focusing on getting the team in the best shape possible ready for the start of the championship league.
Wednesday played two friendly matches while on the training camp against Farense and Sporting de Braga. The first game, against Sporting de Braga resulted in a 2-1 loss for the English team, in Ferreiras stadium. The match against Farense was held in Estádio de São Luís, in Faro and ended in a 0-0 tie.
The players, management and medical team stayed in luxury two bedroom apartments at the Amendoeira Golf Resort. The training camp ran smoothly under the supervision of the experienced Amendoeira Golf Resort team with regard to transfers, training, meals and accommodation.
Other teams who have hosted their training camp at the Amendoeira Sports Club include Aston Villa FC, Reading FC, NEC Nijmegen, AGF Aarhus, Queens Park Rangers FC, the Republic of Ireland U19s Men’s football team, the Kerry footballers and Dublin Hurlers. A host of other professional teams have also trained on the pitch and many friendly matches have been held there.
In addition to the football pitch, there are two 5-a-side football pitches, a Technogym equipped gymnasium, six tennis courts, and sports bar all situated at the Amendoeira Sports Club. The on-site golf courses are the Oceânico Faldo Course designed by Sir Nick Faldo, the Oceânico O’Connor Jnr. course designed by Christy O’Connor Jnr., and the 9 hole, par 3 Oceânico Academy course.
