Champions League fans overload Lisbon airport

lisbonfootballThe final of the Champions League taking place in Lisbon this Saturday 24th May between Madrid teams Real and Atlético has filled Lisbon airport landing slots for aircraft bringing fans to the capital, many of whom do not have tickets to the game.

So far over 280 private and 50 charter flights are scheduled to land in Lisbon representing 75% more landings than on a normal Saturday.

Algarve's EN 125 bridges to be inspected

roadworksEstradas de Portugal is to carry out an inspection of the Algarve’s bridges over the EN 125 to create a calendar of work depending on which one is likely to collapse first.

The work already is underway and that "if all goes normally, within two to three weeks it will be completed," said a spokesman, adding that some bridges will require further study.

Stones joined by Mick Taylor in Lisbon

micktaylorA treat is in store for Rollingt Stones fans of a certain age as the rock legend Mick Taylor, former guitarist with the Stones, will join the band on stage at the Rock in Rio gig next week.

The British band is already in a studio in Oslo, Norway, rehearsing for the concert at the start of a tour that kicks off on Monday in Oslo, followed by Lisbon next Thursday, May 29th.

Algarve tourist figures swell Lisbon's coffers

tourismTourist revenues have grown about 6% in the first quarter of this bright new year of resurgence for the sector that sees the Algarve underpinning the country’s tentative economic recovery.

Revenues from overseas visitors spending time in Portugal grew by 5.87% in the first quarter of 2014 to over €1,560 million, compared to €1,470 million in the corresponding period last year, according to the Bank of Portugal’s latest Statistical Bulletin.

Lagos bridge rebuild finally approved

lagoscrestThe Dona Maria II bridge rebuilding project and the opening of the tendering period for the contract have at last been approved at a special meeting of Lagos council.

It is anticipated that the work will be completed before the summer of 2015. The twelve arches will be strengthened and the pedestrian and bicycle lanes will be given more space.

UK kicks off EU elections

Portugal’s date for voting is Sunday, 25 May, along with most of the EU’s 28 member countries.
