Mobility is something we all take for granted but later in life sometimes we have to face physical limitations imposed by illness or frailty. In an attempt to make a difference to the lives of elderly residents at Espiche Home for the Elderly, St Vincent’s Anglican Church was delighted to present the home with bathing rail aids and eight wheelchairs. These were funded by an independent charitable trust which is administered by the Church of England’s Diocese in Europe.
A warm balmy evening in the magnificent venue of Ingreja da Misericórdia, Tavira was the setting for the Angels Theatre Group’s recital of Lieder and Operatic Arias to celebrate love.
The audience were entertained by Maria Rocha (soprano) and Stephen Dehn (baritone). John Evans on grand piano provided the musical accompaniment. The evening ended with a well deserved standing ovation.
Algarve schools are set to benefit after a 2,000€ cheque was presented by Paul Bechgaard, chaplaincy warden, on behalf of St Vincent’s Anglican Church to A Rocha Portugal in support of their work with local school children.
A Rocha, a Christian conservation organisation, the inspiration of a Church of England priest in the 1990s, began in Cruzinha in the beautiful Alvor Estuary and is now represented in 20 organisations throughout the world. In Portugal they, together with other agencies, are the guardians of the salt water marshes along the Southern Algarve coast. The A Rocha Portugal team, led by Marcial Felgueiras and his wife Paula Banza, scientifically monitors the bird life and migration patterns of birds and the health of the Alvor Lagoon, opposes development which threatens the environment and also runs educational activities working with children.
The evening surpassed all expectations! 120 guests attended the Full Moon Dinner & Party Night on July 19th, at the Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo do Algarve in Faro, organised by afpop Eastern Algarve and Moncarapacho-Fuzeta animal association APAR to raise funds for the Algarve’s needy animals.
An incredible €1759 was raised for APAR. Everyone’s generosity and support was overwhelming.
Six 13- and 14-year-old students representing the ten schools of Agrupomento Silves Sul flew to Southampton for the Wildern School’s Oscars ceremony. They brought six digital films with them, out of the more than 40 produced at the schools, to enter into the Best International Film category.
On July 11, they walked the red carpet to the ceremony. The film, “Mudar de Estilo” from class 2B from EB1 school in Armação de Pêra won the award. Mauro Coelho, accepting the award for the primary school class, said that the trip was a “life changing experience.”
The celebration of HM the Queen’s 90th brought in much-needed funds for children’s charity ACCA. Generous donations mean that more youngsters in need will have specialist life-changing treatments
The Algarvean sunshine was at its brilliant best, bubbly flowed, and canapes did the rounds when ACCA supporters came together at Monte da Quinta Resort on 12 June for a special celebratory afternoon.
HM even made her presence known with a life size model presenting a photo opportunity.
The 2016 Wolf Valley Charity’s Golf and Family day was held at Vale do Lobo on Saturday, 4th June. 168 golfers enjoyed playing on Vale do Lobo’s Royal and Ocean Courses.
During the day the total funds raised by the Wolf Valley Charity Fund (WVCF), since it was established in 1999, topped €1,000,000. The amount raised on the day was just over €30,000.
Another very successful White Night, Branco Ao Jantar, was organised by the Rotary Clubs of Estoi Palace International and Olhão, together with the Alliance Francaise Algarve. 180 people attended the event held at the Faro Catering College.
Everybody attending dresses in white and brings their own food, and dresses their own table. Guests were entertained during the evening by the Sao Bras Folkloric Group, Fadista Raquel Peters, and Danças Salao by Escola Joao de Deus do Faro.
