Oldest human skull in Portugal to go on display in Lisbon

skullfossilA 400,000-year-old fossilised human skull was found in the Aroeira cave in Torres Novas, Santarém, by an international team of archaeologists, led by João Zilhão.

The archaeologists spotted the skull in 2014 as they surveyed the extensive cave system. After years of careful work and analysis, the team has presented its findings in this week's issue of the US National Academy of Sciences’s newsletter.

Minister allows 80,000 potentially unsafe motorbikes to use Portugal's roads

motorbikeMany of Portugal’s vehicle testing centres have been obliged to install expensive new equipment to enable their technicians to test motorbikes of 250cc or more.

Approximately 150 inspection centers paid an average of €200,000 each for the equipment upgrade and have been ready since last October when the legislation led them to believe that, come Jan 1st , 2017, it would be a legal requirement for these motorbikes to be tested.

Vale do Lobo to Quinta do Lago road to be upgraded 'for the tourists'

roadworksIn an image upgrade directed at tourist traffic, Loulé council has awarded a road project to link the EN396 to Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago in Almancil.

The 2.2 kilometre section between the EM 527-2 (Almancil – Quarteira) and the VNC 522 (Vale do Lobo - Quinta do Lago) will naturally include a new roundabout with the budget of €2.2 million.

Another promise to replace the bridge to Faro island

In November 2014, Faro council was said by its opposition to have displayed an "inability and a lack of political influence" for losing out on Community funding for the construction of the new bridge.

Secretary of State for Tax Affairs covered up for private clients in €10 billion offshore transfer affair

nuncioThe former Secretary of State for Tax Affairs, Paulo Núncio, has been called back to parliament to explain his role as a lawyer to the Venezuelan national oil company whose European branch, PDVSA Europe, transferred a significant part of the €7.8 billion that ended up in Panama, using BES as its bankers:  Núncio was a Secretary of State at the time.

The row over the €10 billion in unmonitored offshore transfers between 2011 and 2014 brings Núncio into the spotlight once again as he failed to disclose his role as a lawyer with the law firm Garrigues, which was advising the Venezuelan state oil company, nor did he disclose his involvement in suppressing data about capital outflows from the Madeira free zone.

Spanish king honoured with British state visit before US president

Montepio absolutely guarantees that all the failures identified by the Bank of Portugal that were not been challenged, have been corrected. In a clarification sent to the newsrooms, Montepio said that the Bank of Portugal’s report does not reflect the current situation at Montepio.
