Ana Mendes Godinho, the Secretary of State for Tourism, said the Alojamento Local system for short-term rentals has been a key part of the success of the booming tourism sector, accounting for 10% of overnight stays last year, provising  12% of the number of total beds available to tourists.

Godinho was speaking at a review of 2016 tourism figures organised by the Associação de Restauração e Similares de Portugal and was expected to announce her review of the Alojamento Local system and list the changes that she was going to make.

The Court of Auditors has criticised the Ministry of Finance for "a lack of control" over Caixa Geral de Depósitos between 2013 and 2015.

The audit report conducted by the Ministry of Finance for the period between 2013 and 2015, refers to a "lack of state control" of the State-owned bank in that period after the 2012 recapitalisation when taxpayers were obliged to throw €1.65 billion at the troubled lender.

One person died and two were badly injured in the early morning on Sunday when two cars collided on the notorious EN125 near Estômbar, Lagoa.

According to brief information the official Civil Protection website, the collision took place at 04:35 and the victim died at the scene.

Portugal’s Environment Minister says he has asked Spain for more information on the Almaraz nuclear power plant and the new nuclear fuel dump planned at the site just 100kms from Portugal’s border.

"Today, Friday, we are going to send a new request to Spain for additional information on the project and on the environmental impacts and particularly on the trans-boundary environmental impacts," said Minister, João Matos Fernandes.

The new law that elevates animals from the status of ‘thing’ was published this Friday in Diário da República.

The new legal status of animals, which recognises them as living things endowed with sensitivity and able to interact with humans and their surroundings, enters into force on May 1st, 2017.
