Winners of the 2014 Atlantic Cup train at Amendoeira Golf Resort

FC Copenhagen FC Copenhagen based their team at the Amendoeira Golf Resort during the tournament and the excellent training facilities were put to full use between matches.

FC Copenhagen participated in the 2014 Atlantic Cup in the Algarve, Portugal which ran between 4th and 13th February 2014. During the tournament, the team stayed and trained at the Amendoeira Golf Resort near the town of Silves.

Between 14th January and 1st February 2014, Kabuscorp Sport Clube do Palanca from Luanda in Angloa conducted their pre-season training at the Amendoeira Golf Resort near the town of Silves in the Algarve.

Octogenarian Jim Brownlow rows into the record books

jim BrownlowFor most retirees living in the Algarve, you might think turning 80 would represent a time to reach for their pipe and slippers. Not so for long-time Lagoa resident Jim Brownlow, an enthusiastic and active member of the Algarve Hash House Harriers and Algarve Wednesday Walkers group.

The former Trinity College Dublin and London Rowing Club oarsman is the current British indoor rowing record holder over 2000m for the 75-79 age group (in a time of 7:32.6 minutes – a record set in 2008 and yet to be beaten). For Jim, turning 80 meant moving up an age group and the chance to set some new records.

Alex Lowes and Eugene Laverty the fastest in the Superbike trials at Portimão

Alex LowesYesterday saw the end of the five-day trials for the World Championship Superbike and Supersport at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.

The tests were dogged by unstable weather but nothing got in the way of the performance of the teams and drivers with Alex Lowes (Suzuki GSX-R1000 K14), the WSB rookie, fastest on the Autodrome track with a time of 1:42.5 closely followed by teammate Eugene Laverty with 1:42.6.

Algarve Pirates win season opener

Algarve Pirates - American FootballThe region’s only American Football team, the Algarve Pirates, began their 2014 campaign with a hard fought win over the Lisbon Devils on Saturday evening in Mexilhoeira Grande, near Portimão. Both teams wanted to get their season off to a good start and the Defensive play was strong and hard fought and at half time the game was still tied at 0-0, testament to the strength of both teams’ Defensive play. There were chances to score for both teams, but some excellent tackling and unnecessary penalties meant neither side troubled the scorers for the first 30 minutes of play.

Quinta do Lago course undergoing major refurbishment

Quinta do LagoQuinta do Lago has unveiled plans for a major renovation of its North Course to match the other first-class golfing facilities at the prestigious resort in Portugal’s Algarve.

Work will begin this month (Nov) and the course is scheduled to re-open in October 2014, with the new plans designed by renowned American golf architect Beau Welling in collaboration with European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley.
